Week Four - Camp

This week, Room 8, along with the senior syndicate braved the weather to travel to Houghton's Bush Camp in Muriwai.
For four days we were extremely busy walking through bush, viewing waterfalls, building and testing bivouacs in the elements, challenging ourselves on the confidence course,  reading and following maps for orienteering, enjoying the rugged west cost beaches, braving the dark on a Burma trail, sharing our talents and the camp concert and more.
We returned yesterday afternoon, tired but happy and Friday has been a somewhat quiet day on reflecting on how we have shown resilience, respect and above all Integrity.
We want to say a massive thank you to everybody who was involved, the parents who helped and the staff for looking after us.

  1. Wow R8 - what a week it was. You truly showed us the spirit, resilience, respect and integrity that we expect from our 'Waikowhai Kids'. It was a privilege to be on camp with you. You have developed friendships and created memories that will last a lifetime. Well done and thank you.

    1. Hi Caitlyn, Thanks for your comment. We did loads of amazing things like bush walks, burma trails, orienteering and bivouac building but unfortunately the sea was too chilly and too rough for us to swim. Do you have a camp coming up soon too?

  4. Hello my name is William and I am from Grey Main School. I like all your photos. You must of been lucky with your hospitality and food. I remember our camp at Fox Glacier along with cold weather. Did you have cold weather?

    1. Hi William, Thanks for your comment. We were very lucky with food because one of the Dads that came on camp with us was actually a chef. It was great because the warm food gave us energy too. It felt very cold for us but I am sure it was not as cold as Fox Glacier. When did you go to visit Fox Glacier?

  5. Hi Room 8.
I think that your camp was really fun. The images suggest that it was at a sort of beachfront motel. You could work on maybe suggest that location where you went, to the world. What island is that location in?
    Yours Sincerely.
    Sam.

    1. Hi Sam,
We were at Houghton's Bush Camp in Muriwai, it was kind of set out like a motel. All of the kids were sharing rooms with 5 or 6 other people. They did have to share the bathrooms though. Muriwai is a beach about 45 minutes from our school. We were looking out at an Island on one of our walks but I am not sure of the name of it. It might be something that I could look into with the rest of our class.

    1. Hi Trent,

We had a great time there and the kids got to learn lots of extra skills. A scavenger hunt was one of the things that we were going to do but we ran out of time. We did go orienteering though which was kind of like a scavenger hunt. The children in my class found it very exciting too because they were out looking for clues in the pouring rain. We left last Thursday and we all felt very tired at school on Friday.

      Thanks for your comment,

    1. Hi Kaine,

The children and adults had a great time, it was also very tiring. The biggest walk was on our first day. We walked for about 2 hours and saw some beautiful bush and a waterfall. Then we walked lots on our second day too but we had breaks to play on the beach and look at Gannet colonies. I might see if the children in class would like to put together an i-Movie using some photos from camp.
Thanks for the comment and the idea,
      Mr Riceman

    1. Hi Sebastian,
The children all had a blast at camp, although they were very tired at the end of the week. We went out to Muriwai Beach, not too far from our school. Last year we had a big drive down to Mount Ruapehu. Will you be going on a camp this year or have you already had one?
      Thanks for your comment!

It was lots of fun and the children also had lots of chances to learn about themselves, show resilience and grow their friendships with the rest of the kids in the senior syndicate too. We went to Houghton's Bush Camp at Muriwai Beach.
